2019 Modernism Week Scholarship Program

Eight local students were awarded $40,000 in scholarship funding from Modernism Week and OneFuture Coachella Valley.

Each year, Modernism Week is proud to support our local community and fulfill our mission of celebrating and fostering appreciation of midcentury architecture and design — as well as contemporary thinking in these fields — through the Modernism Week Scholarship Program.

Since the Modernism Week Scholarship Program was initiated in 2011, a total of $163,000 in scholarships has been awarded to students pursuing college educations in the fields of architecture and design. Modernism Week offers renewable scholarship funding for the students for 4 consecutive years.

In 2019, Modernism Week and OneFuture Coachella Valley partnered together to award $40,000 in scholarship funding to the following Coachella Valley students: Fareal Alshimmary, Joseph Gonzalez, Page Horns, Amparo Medina, Karen Meza-Morales, Ignacio Moreno, Jorjele Quintero-Meraz, and Jacqueline Salazar Romo.

“We are proud to partner with OneFuture Coachella Valley in awarding scholarships to these talented students,” said Modernism Week Executive Director Lisa Vossler Smith. “Each of the 2019 scholarship recipients inspires us with their desire to contribute their skills and professional experience to the community. We are excited and hopeful for the next generation of architects, designers, and creatives shaping the Palm Springs of tomorrow.”

“Being awarded this scholarship gives me the motivation to keep working harder and provides me financial support to help me focus primarily in my studies,” shared fellow scholarship recipient and 2nd year Cal Poly Pomona student, Ignacio Moreno. “My plan for the future is to become a Licensed Landscape Architect after I graduate from Cal Poly Pomona. I see myself contributing to the green industry and inspiring members of my community to pursue a higher education.”

Incoming freshman Jorjele Quintero-Meraz will be studying Environmental Science at California Baptist University. “It means a lot to see how Modernism Week is supporting me, and other individuals, to reach our career interests,” Quintero-Meraz said. “I feel very fortunate to have received this scholarship because I know it will truly help me on my journey to become a successful environmental scientist/engineer. I am deeply grateful, thank you Modernism Week.”

UC Berkeley student Joseph Gonzalez is passionate about giving back to his community. “Receiving this scholarship is a chance to help further my education for a passion that I enjoy. After my college graduation I hope to return to the valley and work in an architecture firm, keeping the rich architecture of the valley alive.”

“One of my biggest future plans is helping children all around the world to get off streets and get an education,” says Fareal Alshimmary, who is attending Cal State University Chico. “I want to do so by finding homes for orphans, building orphanages, and incorporating schools within.”

Amparo Medina was encouraged and empowered by being awarded a scholarship to attend Cal Poly Pomona. “Knowing that you all believe in me to do well gives me confidence in myself to do great things in college. Obtaining my degree in Environmental Engineering is my number one priority so that I can be able to come back to the Coachella Valley and share my thoughts and create new ideas that help accentuate the beautiful Coachella Valley features.”

“Receiving this scholarship is an honor I am grateful for, since this financial aid transmits support and encouragement that has motivated me to continue onto higher education and enter university,” said UC San Diego student Jacqueline Salazar Romo. “My plans for the future include giving back to my community through my passion in a related field of engineering and design.”

Special thanks to OneFuture Coachella Valley, who provided matching funds to award each student with $5,000. OneFuture Coachella Valley works to help all students graduate prepared for college, career, and life — expanding and enhancing the local workforce so that our youth and economy thrive.

Congratulations to each of the 2019 Modernism Week Scholarship Recipients!
