The closing weekend of Modernism Week is upon us, but we’re not done with the modernist fun! Tickets are no longer available online for today’s events but they are available at CAMP or at the door. Remember, cash is preferred. Here’s what you need to know about Modernism Week today.
CAMP
Don’t miss the daily demonstrations in the Ferguson Kitchen with Thermador. Recharge your batteries with the DuPont Corian Charging Station, pick your palettes at the Dunn-Edwards Paints booth, fill up on Cheeky’s To Go, and take a break in the Room & Board Lounge. Test drive a new Giulia sedan during the Alfa Romeo Ride Along Experience, all weekend long (first come, first served basis). For each ride, Desert Alfa Romeo will make a donation to Modernism Week’s scholarship program. You could also enter to win trip to Italy – stop by the booth for details!
Lastly, cap off your day with the happiest hour in town, and join leading modernism luminaries for Modernism With A Twist ($45) at 5:00 p.m.
Tours
Donald Wexler designed Sagewood to reflect the quiet elegance of his style, and this self-guided tour ($50) will feature five condominiums emblematic of Wexler’s midcentury vision. Tour Class One Historic Districts like the Roman Revival-style Pompeii de Las Palmas ($35) and the Park Imperial South Homes ($65) designed by Barry Berkus. Other popular tours today include the Chino Canyon Project ($50-$65) and The Christopher Kennedy Compound ($40).
Talks + Films
Modernism Week presents a 3-event program at the Annenberg Theater, including two films and a panel discussion on artist and educator Millard Sheets and Claremont Modernism ($12 each, 9am-2:30pm). Later in the afternoon, trace the work of Australian modernist architect Harry Seidler with a special talk ($12) and U.S. film premier ($18), followed by a conversation with Penelope Seidler and director Daryl Dellora, moderated by film participant, Vladimir Belogolovsky.
Meanwhile at CAMP, get into the minds of the most creative architects of the midcentury in a presentation with author Pierluigi Serrano (10am, $10), followed by a signing of his book “The Creative Architect: Inside the Great Midcentury Personality Study.” Learn about Palm Springs’ influence on Pacific Northwest Modernism (1pm, $10) and meet the author and photographer behind Midnight Modern (3pm, $10).
If that isn’t enough to choose from, you can also walk down memory lane with architectural historian Michael Stern as he presents stories behind his book on Julius Shulman (10am at Architecture & Design Center, $15).
Parties
Celebrate a night of Polynesian culture while supporting the efforts of Kai Wai – a division SEAthletes, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission is to engage the next generation – during the Modern Tiki Rum Party ($85, at the door).
Plan Ahead for the Weekend
There are plenty of festive ways to close out the final weekend of Modernism Week – and the best part is that tickets are still available online and at the door for these parties tomorrow! Sample some of the finest rum and learn about the history of this classic party favorite during History of Rum 101 ($30), with Sailor Jerry and Flor de Cana. If vintage arcades are more your style, sign up for a night of unlimited pinball, food, and drink at Pinball Fever ($125). Fans of Audrey Hepburn won’t want to miss Cocktails at Tiffany’s ($150) at The Christopher Kennedy Compound. Finally, join Charles Phoenix himself for Cake & Cocktails at The Monkey Tree Hotel ($50).
