It’s Thursday and according to Palm Springs logic, that means the weekend starts today! Tickets are no longer available online for today’s events but they are available at CAMP or at the door for certain events. Remember, cash is preferred. Here’s what you need to know about today at Modernism Week today! Happy early weekend!
CAMP
There are daily delicious demonstrations taking place in the Ferguson Demonstration Kitchen so stop by for a snack while you’re lining up for bus tour or hanging in the Room & Board lounge. Food and libations are also available from the Cheeky’s To Go bar at CAMP. Word is getting out about the nightly Modernism With a Twist program – a witty and irreverent look at midcentury life in America. Tickets will be sold at the door ($45, includes wine reception).
Special Events
Modernism Week’s “Afternoon of Slim Aarons” will include a book presentation, talk and film, celebrating the iconic photographer – tickets available at the door at the Annenberg Theater ($15-$45). Beginning at 3pm, author Laura Hawk presents insider stories from her decades of working alongside Aarons, and images from her new book Slim Aarons: Women – book signing to follow. Next up, get a very rare peek behind the scenes of that iconic Poolside Gossip image with “Beyond Poolside Gossip,” a conversation with Nelda Linsk. The North American Premier of the film Slim Aarons, The High Life follows. There are a few remaining tickets to the closing reception at the Rockefeller Estate ($150, at the door – includes talk & film).
Lectures & Presentations
You’re in luck as there are still tickets available to today’s amazing line up of lectures and presentations. Catch Eliot Noyes: Understanding a Pioneer of Modern Design ($12). Noyes was the first of the so-called “Harvard Five” to settle in New Canaan, CT, a group that included Marcel Breuer, Landis Gores, John Johansen and Philip Johnson. Each developed stellar careers, based in part from the worldwide recognition of their modernist homes for themselves and influential clients and New Canaan is widely regarded as the East Coast’s epicenter in the development of midcentury modern architecture.
Other items on today’s roster of presentations include Sunnylands: Past, Present and Future, delving into the landscape restoration and design of the iconic estate (10am at CAMP, $10), The Harvard Five in New Canan, a follow-up to the Eliot Noyes presentation (10:30am at the Annenberg Theater, $12), Brooke Hodge’s MetaModern Mash Up gives a curator’s perspective on the current exhibition at the Architecture & Design Center (10:30am, $15) and presentations on California Modernism and Soviet Modernism (12pm and 1:30pm at the Annenberg Theater, $12).
Tours
The Christopher Kennedy Compound reopens today for tours ($40, at the door). The Chino Canyon Project ($50-65) is also open all day, including a sunset reception for those who wish to linger a bit longer.
Exhibitions
Don’t miss this free exhibition of architectural models of iconic midcentury modern homes by a new generation of 7th grade modernists. During the exhibition, visitors will have an opportunity to see St. Theresa School, part of which was designed by renowned midcentury architect William Cody in 1968. The St. Theresa School exhibition is free and only open for one more day, today Thursday. Also be sure to catch the free exhibit E. Stewart Williams, Architect : A Palm Springs Modern Master, and FAST FORWARD Architecture of William F. Cody at the Palm Springs Library, on loan from the Architecture + Design Museum in Los Angeles, open daily ($10).
