This Walter S. White house has a bright future ahead.
This is definitely one of Palm Desert’s most notable historic preservation success stories. Back in 2018, Los Angeles-based architecture firm Stayner Architects acquired the house from the City of Palm Desert at public auction and spent the last two years restoring it to perfection. During Modernism Week 2020, the doors of the Wave House were opened to the public for the first time since its completion.
The Modernism Week Featured Home: Miles Bates “Wave” House was kicked off with a few private events, then opened up for sold-out public tours during Weekend Two of Modernism Week. Of note, Walter S. White’s daughter and granddaughters came to stay and see how the restoration had turned out, as chronicled in the Desert Sun.
Read about the details of how Stayner Architects restored this one-bedroom house two-bathroom home that was designed by Walter S. White for local lothario Miles C. Bates in the Wall Street Journal. Also check out Dwell for details about the restoration process.
Later this year, Stayner Architects will break ground on two more guest suites and an outdoor area, which together with the Wave House, will create a micro-hospitality experience called The Desert Wave. The Desert Wave will continue to be a destination for design discourse, artists residencies, and group rentals. Walter S. White’s work will be accessible for generations to come.
